Virtual Musicians

A virtual musician is a member of a band or a solo act who is not real. The music itself is made and recorded by real people, but all of the media such as interviews, video clips, and even stage shows are “performed” by the fictional character. In the case of live concerts, this is often achieved with the use of holograms and other special effects.

Gorillaz

Listed in the Guiness Book of World Records as the most successful virtual band ever, with plenty of awards and platinum records to prove it, Gorillaz are not just a band, but a complex story complete with it's own virtual world fans can explore and participate in. The story has been told over 10 years through music videos, short animations, and interactive web pages.

The band is composed of 4 fictional members. 2D, the brain damaged lead singer, Noodle, the young Japanese guitar prodigy who arrived in the mail, Russel, the possessed drummer, and Murdoc, the satanic bass player.

Hatsune Miku

Hatsune Miku is unique in that she does not have someone providing her with a voice. Instead, she uses Yamaha Corporation's Vocaloid 2 synthesizing technology.

Miku is the 3rd character created to use vocaloid technology and is by far the most popular due to her cuteness and sometimes tsundere nature, making her appeal to Japanese audiences. Miku is treated as a real life idol in Japan and is used in marketing and merchandise.

Miku's voice software is available for purchase so that fans can have her sing their own songs and the animation software used to create her "physically" is available for free.

Dethklok
(links may contain offensive content)

Starring in their own TV show, Metalocalypse, as ridiculously rich metal musicians who may be unwittingly bringing about the apocalypse (according to the secret government agency that watches them), Dethklok are hilariously clueless about everything but music. Their existence focuses more on their antics than their actual music. However, they still tour and have released 2 albums and many music videos.

The band consists of Nathan Explosion, the well-read yet still somewhat dimwitted vocalist, Toki Wartooth, the sweet but insane rhythm guitarist, Pickles the Drummer, the ex-glam metal band member who is almost never sober, William Murderface, the angry self-hating bassist, and Skwisgar Swigelf, the haughty lead guitarist. They are managed by the highly intelligent Charles Foster Ofdenson, whom they refer to as a butler and are also frequently accosted by a cocaine addled rock and roll clown named Dr. Rockso, who is a member of his own virtual band.

Country Lovin'

For the past few years, I have had the pleasure of attending Keith Urban every September he has been in town. The atmosphere of his concerts are far past words I can describe. The second his voice fills the mic, I honestly get goose bumps. His lyrics are unlike any other, especially because he writes them himself. What's almost better then Keith, almost, are the opening acts that have tagged along with him. It seems every band that tours with Keith blows up that year! 1st year, was Jason Aldean. At the time, I had no idea who he was. Once I heard him sing, with such a powerful voice, "You're The Love I Wanna Be In," I knew I'd love the rest. He has become quite popular, especially this year singles like "Dirt Road Anthem", and "Tattoos on This Town".

Keith Urban and Lady A.
The second year I saw Keith, Lady Antebellum had opened for him. This time, I had heard quite a few of their songs from their first album and was beyond excited to hear them live. All of these artists are 100x better live then on CD. It's like nothing else when you've heard one of your favorite bands live for the first time, its so hard to go back to listening to it on CD. If I remember correctly, they had opened with "Love Don't Live Here Anymore".  This past September, Up and Coming artist The Band Perry graced the Saddledome. This had to of been my favorite time seeing Keith. With both of them just releasing new albums it was unreal. Check any of these artists out, even if you're not a fan of country music its worth a try!

Alexisonfire

Alexisonfire was a 5 piece band based out of St. Catharine's Ontario that formed in early 2001. They have been quite successful producing a total of 4 studio albums, and ideas of a 5th in the works. Unfortunately, early this year, the band had announced they would seize recording and broke up. Regardless of the note lead singer George posted on their website, rumors are flying about their break-up. It had been said that Dallas Green, back up vocalist and guitar, wanted to focus and pursue his side project, City & Colour. ( Christine has already done a great job of discussing City & Colour, so I've hyperlinked her post for your reading pleasure).  Wade had stated that he had intentions of joining another band, and the rest of the members had personal issues that needed to be overcome. Hearing about this break-up was quite devastating for me. This has been my favorite band for quite some time. I'm incredibly lucky that I have seen Alexisonfire twice, and City & Colour once this past month.
The combination of Georges more harsh vocals, and Dallas' harmonic one, creates perfection. That is one of the many reasons I adore them so much. This could be anywhere in the world was one of the first songs I listened to on repeat until Crisis came out in 2006. You know when teens are in their "teen angst" phase? Yeah, this is the soundtrack to my teens, and still is. If you haven't given these guys a listen, I highly suggest it. Even my parents like the more mellow songs!

A few to check out,

Gotye

Gotye’s real name is Wouter De Backer and he was born in Bruges Belgium on May 21, 1980.  He typically goes by the English version of his name “Walter,” or “Wally.”  Gotye is De Backer’s professional stage name and is pronounced gore-ti-yeah. De Backer and his family moved to Melbourne, Australia when he was two years old.  From an early age he showed a deep interest in music and he learnt to play piano, drums, and percussion.

In his teens De Backer formed a band called The Downstares with some high school friends.  They often performed live and were a local favorite.  Although the band went their separate ways after high school, one of the band members named Lucas Taranto still plays live with Gotye.  At this time some in De Backer’s life some of his favorite artists included Depeche Mode and Kate Bush.  After De Backer graduated from high school he received a collection of LP records from a neighbor and it is known that these albums helped to form ideas for what is now known as Gotye.

De Backer worked incredibly hard to have his music heard and sent his music into local radio stations.  While he was working on his solo music he joined an Australian band called The Basics who he still is part of and tours with. De Backer has independently released three studio albums called Boredface, Like Drawing Blood, and Making Mirrors.  In 2003, Gotye’s album Boardface was released and received good local reviews.  His second album Like Drawing Blood also received respectable reviews and was voted Number 1 in the listener’s poll of the Best Album of 2006 and has sold over 35,000 copies.  Gotye’s newest album was released in 2011 is called Making Mirrors.  For this album Gotye impressively wrote the songs, sang them, and also performed the drums, percussion, keyboards and did the production for the album.  The album name “Making Mirrors” was inspired by a painting his father made in the 1980’s and Gotye made the painting the album cover.  It has only been since the release of this latest album that Gotye has been successfully internationally.  Of his most popular internationally successful songs, is Somebody That I Used To Know, which Gotye performed on Jimmy Kimmel Live! that aired on February 1, 2012.

Gotye’s sound has been compared to Sting and Peter Gabriel.  The genre of his music is typically indie or experimental rock but he calls his own music alternative-pop.  Gotye has won five ARIA Awards and received a nomination for an MTV EMA for Best Asia and Pacific Act.

The Acoustic Guitar

The guitar is a musical instrument that has many varieties and is widely used. In this post I am going to briefly describe the different kinds of guitars there are out there.

The Acoustic Guitar

~ has been used for thousands of years, in obviously variant forms
~ made of wood, with a large hour glass shape, hollow, and has a neck, and has strings
~ playing is done by plucking the strings by finger or by using a pick

3 Types of Acoustic Guitars
 * Classical Guitar: has nylon strings
* Steel-String Acoustic Guitar: the steel strings create a brighter and louder sound. This type of acoustic is the most commonly used and is referred to as just an acoustic guitar
* Archtop Guitar: similar to the steel-string, the only real difference is that the neck is slightly arched top giving a more bluesy and jazz sound.

I love the acoustic guitar. I actually play a little, a very little but I'd love to learn more. I appreciate the sound of it. I love to sing and singing is way more fun when there is a musical instrument, as versatile as the guitar to go along with it. It is an amazing instrument with a beautiful sound. There are some other kinds of guitars such as the electric guitar, but I find the acoustic guitar more attractive of a sound.

A Day To Remember

A Day to Remember is an American rock band from Florida. Founded in 2003 by guitarist Tom Denny and drummer Bobby Scruggs, the band has released four studio albums, nine singles and eight music videos. They are mainly known for their unusual amalgamation of metalcore and pop punk as a musical style.

The band signed with  Victory Records, with their new drummer Alex Shellnut, and went straight  into Zing Studios to record their second full-length.The album, titled For Those Who Have Heart was released in January 2007 on Victory Records and peaked at #17 on Billboard's Top Heatseekers chart and #43 on the Top Independent Albums chart.

Afterwards, the band had a lengthy tour opening for bands like  Silverstein  along with The Devil Wears Prada and Protest the Hero, And  In  2008  they played Vans Warped Tour. .

Personal Thoughts:

I got hocked on this band around the age of 15. I found I could really relate to there lyrics and they were one of the first concert I had gone to, and once I saw there live stage performance I was insantly hocked. I still to this day find myself listening to them.

The Fan base this band has is insane I dont I have ever seen so many people at once event. I encourage anyone who has the chance to get out and see them live.

James Taylor

In my Blue Rodeo blog I mentioned that my dad was a big influence on the music that I listened to growing up.  Another musician that my dad introduced me to that has become one of my favorites is James Taylor.  His genre can be described loosely as folk/slow rock and he is widely known for his amazing baritone voice.  James Taylor has lived a very interesting and successful life, although it did not begin successful.  Taylor was born in Boston in 1948 to a wealthy family who gave him and his siblings everything they could have wanted.  At age 16 he dropped out of boarding school to join his brother’s rock band and about a year later he checked himself into a mental institution for his severe depression.  After being released he wound up with the wrong crowd and became addicted to heroin.  Taylor moved to London and got the opportunity to record some of his music with Peter Asher which was released in 1968 as an album called James Taylor.  His music was not an immediate success even though a few of his most successful and classic songs appeared on the album. (Something In The Way She Moves  and Carolina In My Mind)

James Taylor moved back to the US and since he was still depressed and addicted to heroin, he checked into another mental institution.  Shortly after, Taylor came out with another CD called Sweet Baby James, which was released in February of 1970.  It was a “triple platinum album that spawned his first Top 10 hit, the intensely personal Fire and Rain" (Reference).  This song was written by Taylor about his own life and his struggles.  Taylor quit his drug habits and skyrocketed to the top of the charts.

Since then, James Taylor has released 23 more albums including greatest hits compilations and Christmas albums.  Some of Taylor’s accomplishments on his list of achievements include; that he has won numerous Grammy Awards, put out wildly successful gold albums, invaded the top of music charts with countless songs, had the honor of being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame, he has been named person of the year by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, and his album One Man Band was nominated for an Emmy.  On his website, Taylor has recently begun uploading videos of guitar lessons given by himself for people wishing to learn from him.  He has always played guitar with a very unique style that has inspired people all over the world.

When I was 18 I managed to go see James Taylor in concert.  The show felt like it went on forever and I did not want it to stop.  I did not know all of the songs he played but they were all wonderful.  His stage presence, his voice, the music, and the performance in general were amazing.  I am sure I could have not known a single song and still loved it all.  The songs remind me so deeply of my childhood that being in the same building as Taylor and listening to him play was unreal.  One of my favourite songs by James Taylor is called Steamroller Blues and on stage he made up his own version which made the audience go crazy, it was just amazing.  Below is a video of the song as I knew it on Taylor's Greatest Hits Album from 1976.

Snow Patrol

About four years ago I was introduced to a band called Snow Patrol.  Snow Patrol is an alternate rock band that was formed in Scotland in 1994.  Snow Patrol only has two original members with it now, the lead singer/songwriter and guitarist GaryLightbody, and Johnny Quinn who plays drums.  The other members include Nathan Connolly (quitar, back-up vocals), Paul Wilson (bass), Johnny McDaid (piano, rhythm guitar, backing vocals), and Tom Simpson (keyboards).

Their 1998 album Songs for Polar Bears is named such because the band used to be called Polar Bear.  It was named Polar Bear until the band found out that Eric Avery (former Jane’s Addiction bassist) had a side project band called the same, and so “Snow Patrol” was born.  The second album by Snow Patrol was released in spring of 2001 called When It’s All Over We Still Have To Clear Up, which increased the band’s status but did not put out any big hits.  However, “in 2003 they released Final Straw their first number one album, which yielded the band’s first top 5 hit, Run”  (Reference).

In 2006 their album Eyes Open came with the bands biggest hit to date, Chasing Cars.  It was hugely popular in both the UK and the US and has been nominated for and won a number of awards.  “As of 8 January 2012, the single has spent 108 weeks on the official UK Top 75 Singles Chart and 154 on the Top 100 and has sold 816,877 copies in the UK by November 2011, despite missing the Top 5.  It also sold 3,131,000 copies in the US by November 2011, making it one of the top 10 best-selling songs by a British artist in the digital era” (Reference).

Here is a link to an interview with Gary Lightbody at the Q awards after Chasing Cars won the “Q classic song.”  Click Here

Since the release of Eyes Open, Snow Patrol has put out three more albums.  A Hundred Million Suns came out in 2008, with varied reviews and adequate chart success.  Their sixth album called Up to Now is a greatest hits album of sorts, with three new songs.  The latest Snow Patrol album titled Fallen Empires was released in the UK on November 14, 2011 but has just been released in North America on January 20, 2012.  This album has also received some mixed reviews and a handful of the songs on the album really stray from Snow Patrol’s original style.

Personally, I absolutely love Snow Patrol.  My favourite songs by Snow Patrol are from their Eyes Open and A Hundred Million Suns albums but they have amazing songs on their other albums too.  I previously knew the song Chasing Cars because it made an epic appearance in the season 2 finale of the TV show Grey's Anatomy.  I instantly fell in love with the song but I never explored the band's other music.  About four years ago I heard a CD of Snow Patrol in a friend's car and I have been listening to and highly anticipating new releases of their music ever since.  My favourite song by Snow Patrol is called Make This Go On Forever.  I think that there can be different interpretations of the song but to me it is about a man going through a tough time in a relationship but he cannot imagine his life without the woman he is with.  I think that the woman in the song cares about him but knows that the relationship is over.  I find that a lot of Snow Patrol's songs comforting to listen to.  The songs describe different emotions such as love, sadness and hope, exactly how I feel them.

Make This Go On Forever

Here is a list of song links I recommend for anyone wishing to listen to more Snow Patrol songs

Is this song Indie by making fun of Indie people?

This new song by local Calgary rapper Transit, featuring Geeze was posted all across social networking sites such as facebook. I actually went to highschool with Geeze, he was a few years older than me so I've only spoken to him a couple of times, but I knew him well enough to know that he definitely had talent and a happy go lucky soul. This song is about the irony of how "being indie" aka. being non-conformist, is actually become a conformity all on its own. These days it seems as though everyone is trying to be different and unique...all in the same way and with the same fads. This song sung by local artists and made in the Calgary area, including the small town Okotoks, describes how people, though trying to be different are still just as bad as a herd of following sheep. Listen carefully to the lyrics. I have never heard a song that actually makes as many good, hilarious and true points, so is this song indie by making fun of the MANY hipsters or wannabe hipsters out there? Decide for yourself.

Mom, Where did Music come from?

Music is a way of self-expression. Some people would say that the kind of music we listen to you, is what defines who we are. There are obviously many trends in music as the decades pass. But where did it all begin?

The 50's

Jazz

Jazz music is a style that has been around for a very long time in various forms all interconnecting with one another. But the types of jazz that are more well-known and still popular in this age are they types that were born in the 50's

Some Genres:

~ Dixieland Revival
One of the most popular variations of jazz music during the 1950's.
Louis Armstrong, was one of the most influential and famous of this genre in his time.

.

~Bebop
Influential people of the Bebop 1950's period were Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie.
With jazz being such a flexible kind of sound, Dizzy once said:

"People talk about the Hines band being 'the incubator of bop' and the leading exponents of that music ended up in the Hines band. But people also have the erroneous impression that the music was new. It was not. The music evolved from what went before. It was the same basic music. The difference was in how you got from here to here to here ... naturally each age has got its own shit."

~Modal Jazz
~Free Jazz

Today jazz is not as popular as it once was, however, many elements are transferred into modern pop music by artists such as Christina Aguilera and Norah Jones.

POP!
Most people probably don't know that pop was around in the 50's. The reason why is because the sound has obviously evolved throughout the years. Some known CLASSIC, and I mean classic pop stars of the 50's include: Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Tony Bennet, Judy Garland etc. This kind of pop, was categorized as "Classic Pop". Today's pop celebrities, such as Lady Gaga, and the late Amy Whinehouse took inspiration from these creative souls in their own work, and it has become a popular thing, to record songs alongside these icons, to make music history

Here is a video of Lady Gaga alongside Tony Bennet reinventing the 1937 tune "The Lady is a Tramp"

Brace yourselves folks, Lady Gaga can sing actual music, classic music and sound breath-taking, other than her mainstream music such as "Polkerface".

Rock and Roll Baby

Rock and roll overpowered the 50's in a blur. When pop had been the biggest think with artists such as the rat pack around, it was the electric guitar and singers such as Buddy Holly and Elvis Presley who gave rock and roll it's big break.

Elvis Presley has sold over one billion record units worldwide, which is more than any other other artist in the record industry. No wonder they called him the the King.

Blue Rodeo

Growing up, one of my only music influences was my father. When driving me to school in the morning he would put his music on loud enough to make me plug my ears, drum his fingers to the beat on the steering wheel, or pump the break peddle to the beat of my song when we would come to a stop light. At night I would watching him sing and play air guitar while washing the dishes and I loved when he would pick me up and dance around the kitchen with me. It was not long before I knew all the words in every song and I could tell you the order of the songs on all of his favorite CD’s. I also began to realize that this music was not at all what children my age would listen to. My friends would show me their music (Britney Spears, N’Sync, Backstreet Boys, etc.) but I never shared the music I listened to, thinking nobody would know it.

In grade 8 I had a new friend over to my house to do a class project. While we were working on it my dad started the dishes and put on the Blue Rodeo greatest hits CD. As I sang along, I realized my friend Carolyn was also singing along. It turns out Carolyn also grew up listening to Blue Rodeo because of her family.  Since then, we have always listened to and talked about the band, waited for their new CD's and went to our first Blue Rodeo concert together.

Blue Rodeo is a Canadian band that was formed in the early 1980’s. I would describe Blue Rodeo’s genre as folk country rock. Their sound is definitely not for everyone, since almost none of my friends even now listen to them but they are one of my top favorite bands. Their music is generally slower but the songs cover almost every emotion one can think of and lots of them have very important and deep meanings to me.

Jim Cuddy and Greg Keelor are the band’s creators. They met in high school and after trying out different sounds for their music they eventually formed Blue Rodeo. Jim Cuddy serves as the band’s vocals and guitar but I have also seen his play the harmonica and piano. Jim Cuddy has a beautiful, softer voice and he is very talented with instruments. For some songs he plays the harmonica and the guitar at the same time. Greg Keelor also serves as the band’s vocals and guitar. His voice sounds more rough to me but both him and Jim Cuddy’s voices compliment each other well in their music. The only other original member of the band is Bazil Donovan who plays bass. Glenn Milchem plays drums and Bob Egan plays many instruments such as guitars, pedal steel, and banjo.
Here is a link to the Blue Rodeo website:

My favorite song by Blue Rodeo usually changes depending on how I feel but one of my favorite’s is always their song “Try.” This song came out in October of 1987 and was a top hit.

My friend Carolyn and I went to our first Blue Rodeo concert when we were 17 and if it was possible we fell more deeply in love with the band and their music. The next time the band came to Calgary was July 2009 at Flames Central and we were quick to buy our tickets. Since the venue was a stand-up area in front of the stage we pushed our way to the very front and happened to be standing at the feet of Greg Keelor. We were belting out all the words to every song when I thought I saw Greg look at Carolyn in the eyes. I was going blind with excitement but Carolyn said that he probably could not even see us because of the lighting. Not long after Greg Keelor looked directly at me and smiled! The rest of the concert we kept seeing him look at us. At one point he walked right to the edge of the stage and Carolyn grabbed his leg. I thought that we were going to be kicked out but thankfully nothing happened. At the end of the concert a security guard called us over and I thought we were going to be banned from all Blue Rodeo concerts from Carolyn grabbing Greg’s leg but to our amazement he handed us two backstage passes and said Greg Keelor had personally invited us backstage for the after party. I think we both nearly fainted but we pulled it together and spent the evening with one of our favorite bands. It was a dream and an experience I will never forget.

For anyone looking to listen to anymore Blue Rodeo songs, I would specifically recommend “5 Days in May,” “Lost Together,” “Bad Timing,” or any other song on their greatest hits!

The Founders of Black Metal

Black Metal is a subgenre of heavy metal music. Lyrics are commonly shrieked, guitars are often distorted, drums use blast beats, and the song structures themselves are atypical. Black Metal rose out of Thrash Metal in the 80s with bands like Venom, Bathory, and Celtic Frost. The genre name itself comes from a Venom album name. It was bands in the 90s such as Mayhem and Burzum that truly made Black Metal a bona fide subgenre of metal.

Black Metal is often criticized for the anti-Christian lyrics and over all dark attitude of many artists. The Norwegian Black Metal scene is blamed for over 50 arsons of centuries old churches in the early 90s in Norway. Bands themselves were heavily involved and supportive of the burings. Burzum’s album Aske (Norwegian for Ashes) includes a picture of one of the burnt churches as an album cover.

In Until The Light Take Us the reasons behind the church burnings are revealed. The churches were built on pagan lands and burning them was no different than if vikings had burnt them when they were first built.

One of the church burners, Varg Vikernes of Burzum, has also been convicted of the murder of his Mayhem band mate, Euronymous. Vikernes has stated that Aarseth "planned to kill him and that he was striking first in self-defense". When arrested, 150 kg of explosives and 3,000 rounds of ammunition in Vikernes' home. He said he planned to blow up a Blitz house in Oslo because his neo-nazi fascist ideals clashed with their anarchy. On May 24, 2009, Vikernes was released from prison on probation after being denied parole and leaving a low security prison to ride in a Volvo with an "AG3 automatic rifle, a handgun, numerous large knives, a gas mask, camouflage clothing, a laptop, a compass, various maps and a fake passport."

The murdered, Euronymous, was no innocent. When Per Yngve Ohlin (nicknamed Dead), bandmate and vocalist for Mayhem shot himself, Euronymous made neckclaces from bits of his skull. There are also rumours that he made a stew of the dead mans brain and ate it. Euronymous was ecstatic at his bandmates death, informing others by saying "Dead has done something really cool! He killed himself." Bård 'Faust' Eithun has said that he believes Dead's suicide "marked the point at which, under Euronymous's direction, the black metal scene began its obsession with all things satanic and evil." and that Euronymous was actually deeply affected by the death. A photo of the dead body was used as an album cover (Warning: graphic).

Euronymous was the owner of a record shop called Helvete (Norwegian for Hell), where members of the Black Metal scene met in what some would call a cult-like fashion, calling themselves "the Black Circle." The actual existence of the Black Circle is highly disputed. Whether there was or was not a cult out of Helvete, it can not be denied that it's opening and fame led to the spread of the Black Metal style worldwide.
