Mom, Where did Music come from?

Music is a way of self-expression. Some people would say that the kind of music we listen to you, is what defines who we are. There are obviously many trends in music as the decades pass. But where did it all begin?

The 50's

Jazz

Jazz music is a style that has been around for a very long time in various forms all interconnecting with one another. But the types of jazz that are more well-known and still popular in this age are they types that were born in the 50's

Some Genres:

~ Dixieland Revival
One of the most popular variations of jazz music during the 1950's.
Louis Armstrong, was one of the most influential and famous of this genre in his time.

.

~Bebop
Influential people of the Bebop 1950's period were Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie.
With jazz being such a flexible kind of sound, Dizzy once said:

"People talk about the Hines band being 'the incubator of bop' and the leading exponents of that music ended up in the Hines band. But people also have the erroneous impression that the music was new. It was not. The music evolved from what went before. It was the same basic music. The difference was in how you got from here to here to here ... naturally each age has got its own shit."

~Modal Jazz
~Free Jazz

Today jazz is not as popular as it once was, however, many elements are transferred into modern pop music by artists such as Christina Aguilera and Norah Jones.

POP!
Most people probably don't know that pop was around in the 50's. The reason why is because the sound has obviously evolved throughout the years. Some known CLASSIC, and I mean classic pop stars of the 50's include: Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Tony Bennet, Judy Garland etc. This kind of pop, was categorized as "Classic Pop". Today's pop celebrities, such as Lady Gaga, and the late Amy Whinehouse took inspiration from these creative souls in their own work, and it has become a popular thing, to record songs alongside these icons, to make music history

Here is a video of Lady Gaga alongside Tony Bennet reinventing the 1937 tune "The Lady is a Tramp"

Brace yourselves folks, Lady Gaga can sing actual music, classic music and sound breath-taking, other than her mainstream music such as "Polkerface".

Rock and Roll Baby

Rock and roll overpowered the 50's in a blur. When pop had been the biggest think with artists such as the rat pack around, it was the electric guitar and singers such as Buddy Holly and Elvis Presley who gave rock and roll it's big break.

Elvis Presley has sold over one billion record units worldwide, which is more than any other other artist in the record industry. No wonder they called him the the King.
