History of Hiphop
My Evolution of Music
history of house music
Definition:
House music is a genre of electronic dance music that originated in the American city of Chicago, Illinois in the early 1980s. It was initially popularized in mid-1980s discotheques catering to African-Americans in Chicago circa 1984, then in other locations such as New York City, New Jersey, Toronto, Montreal, London, Detroit, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Miami. It then reached and began to influence popular music in Europe, with pop chart hits such as "House Nation" by House Master Boys and the Rude Boy Of House (1987) and "Doctorin' The House" by Cold cut (1988). Since the early to mid-1990s, house music has been infused in mainstream pop and dance music worldwide.
Early house music was generally dance-based music characterized by repetitive 4/4 beats and rhythms centered around drum machines.

Music Piracy
The two opposing sides in the controversy over whether music piracy is a crime are the "pirates" themselves, and a large chunk of the music industry. (Some musicians support piracy and offer free downloads of their music themselves).
One of the most prominent and critisized bands to be against music piracy is Metallica. When they discovered that an unreleased song of theirs was available on Napster the band and those assosiated with them threw a fit and took legal action which eventually led to Napster being shut down.
Backlash against Metallica was huge and they are still hated by some for what happened 12 years later. File-sharers were angry that Metallica had a ton of money and fame and wanted more at the expense of their fans. This is one of the most commin arguments used by file-sharing supporters. The bands and record companies get rich enough off of concerts, merch, and selling the rights to their music to movies and TV, therefore, the fans should not have to pay 20 dollars for a CD. In 21st century fashion, the rage spread all over the internet resulting in a serious dip in popularity for Metallica.
Video contains strong language
Not all bands oppose piracy. Bands like NOFX called the music industry parasitic and said musicians don't get all that much money from record sales anyway. Most of it goes to executives who had no hand in the creative process. Many punk and metal bands, save for Metallica if they can even still be called metal, support piracy as a form of robbing the rich for the benefit of the poor. The music industry was seen as outdated in the late 20th century and early 21st century and pirates and bands alike were calling for an overhaul with their anti-industry actions.
Change came with iTunes and other sites that allowed individual songs to be purchased. Prices became lower and fans could pick and choose what to pay for. Music Piracy, however, still happens and bands still do not typically get a large amount from record sales. There will probably always be pirates but there will be less and less of them if the music industry continues to evolve to accomidate new technology and ideas for distribution.

The Voice
The Voice is an American reality talent show that premiered on April 26, 2011, on the NBC television network. Based on the reality singing competition The Voice of Holland, the series was created by Dutch television producer John de Mol and is Executive Produced by Mark Burnett. It is part of an international series. The Voice immediately proved to be a hit for NBC and in May 2011, the network renewed the show for a second season. It premiered February 5, 2012, immediately following NBC's broadcast of Super Bowl XLVI
How Does The Show work?
The series consists of three phases: a blind audition, a battle phase, and live performance shows. Four judges/coaches, all noteworthy recording artists, choose teams of contestants through a blind audition process. Each judge has the length of the auditioner's performance (about one minute) to decide if he or she wants that singer on his or her team; if two or more judges want the same singer (as happens frequently), the singer has the final choice of coach.
Each team of singers is mentored and developed by its respective coach. In the second stage, called the battle phase, coaches have two of their team members battle against each other directly by singing the same song together, with the coach choosing which team member to advance from each of individual "battles" into the first live round. Within that first live round, the surviving acts from each team again compete head-to-head, with public votes determining one of two acts from each team that will advance to the final eight, while the coach chooses which of the remaining three acts comprises the other performer remaining on the team.
Battle Rounds Look Like This:
In the final phase, the remaining contestants compete against each other in live broadcasts. The television audience and the coaches have equal say 50/50 in deciding who moves on to the final 4 phase. With one team member remaining for each coach, the final 4 contestants compete against each other in the finale with the outcome decided solely by public vote

One of those days...
Woke up on the wrong side of the bed?
Anything and everything you do just doesn't go right??
Yeah..
Having one of those days already and its only 10:30am.
Well it's monday, and that is awful as it is.
Worked on a paper ALL weekend thats due today...and what do I do?
I FORGET IT AT HOME.
Didn't win roll up the rim, again. I'm about 2/57. I drink at least 2 coffees from Tim Hortons a day, 1/6 is a lie.
Got my midterm back in chemistry, did about 100x worse then I thought I did.
So anyways, just having an off day.
For off days like today, I usually listen to music all day to block out life's little blunders.
Today's band of the day is The Foo Fighters.
Such passionate and angry lyrics, makes everything all better. Dave Grohl's voice is just so soothing.
Grohl used to be the drummer for Nirvana. He is the lead singer, guitarist, and primary song writer of The Foo Fighters. Also, he has a side project, Them Crooked Vultures, for which he is the drummer.

Marshall Bruce Mathers III
Mathers was raised by his mother after his father left them. They moved around a lot but eventually settled down in Detroit when Mathers was a teenager. At 11 years old Mathers was introduced to the rap/hip-hop genre by his uncle and began performing amateur rap songs at age 14 under the stage name M&M (Marshall Mathers). Although the rap genre is predominantly led my people of African American origin, Mathers was accepted and liked. As he grew older and gained more life experiences, Mathers became well known for incorporating his life struggles and his family into his music. People he has included in his songs include his daughter Hailie, his uncle Ronnie who introduced him to rap, his mother Debbie, and his ex-wife Kim.
Controversy and skepticism have always followed Mathers and his music but he always manages to create top-selling albums. He has written songs about taking his infant daughter to dispose of his wife's body, and even insults numerous artists, actors, and actresses. When Eminem created the alternate persona Slim Shady the music that he came out with were ridden with drug, alcohol, sexual, mental instability and violent lyrics. It is at this time that he wrote a song encouraging a man to kill his wife and her lover.
Although he has been ridden by countless legal issues, drug problems, and mental-instability along with many other problems, he is still managing to make top-selling records and is loved world-wide for his rap artistry other talents.

Zackariah and the Prophets
Kyles Bass Guitar after his blister burst. Nice. |
HISTORY
These 4 talented aspiring musicians met in highschool while attending Bishop Carroll Senior High. Josh and Kyle became friends in grade ten, and a year later Zack and Barry came into the picture, being friends all throughout their childhood. The story of how they all began to hang out together is a little vague but one of the members recalls that Kyle met Zack and Barry in a drama class and discovered that they all played instruments and shared a love of music. It was suggested that they all "jam" together, and it just happened to work out well for them and thus Zackariah and the Prophets were born.
NOW
Currently the band has taken a brief break from performing shows. They all have alternative jobs, living the lives of young struggling musicians. However, they have also been working on recording some of their music in hopes of soon releasing and EP for their fans. Though they have been too busy to play any recent gigs, they just announced that they will be playing at Dickens Pub in Calgary opening for a band called Blackberry Wood on March 29th at 8:00pm. I encourage everyone to go check them out! You will not be disappointed!
Here is a sneak peak at one of the bands jam sessions that they posted on YouTube of one of their very own songs, "Cat Eyes".
Kickin it Old Schooooool!
The original definition of the word: "Verb: Strike (a hard surface) with a series of rapid audible blows, esp. in order to attract attention: "he stood up and rapped the table"
Defintion of rap music: "a type of rhythmic talking, often with accompanying rhythm instruments"
It can sort of be seen why the word "rap" was used to describe this more recent genre of music. Due to it's audio sound, of quick words, and attention grabbing beats, it resembles the original definition of what a "rapping" was for.
Rap has technically been around for centuries, if you follow its roots all the way back through African-American History. This form of speaking words in a kind of poetry to a beat has been around for a long time but the popularity of it used in hip hop as it is today has only been recently popular compared to the many other types of music genres that have been around for decades and decades.
The type of rap or hip hop that I am focusing on in this blog, is Old School. Old School hip hop was a much simpler version, than what you hear today from artists such as Emininem who use plays on words and who use their music to talk about controversies and politics.
One of the most remembered Old School rapper was Melle Mel who was apart of the hip hop group Grand-Master Flash and The Furious Five. Here's a video clip of a popular old school rap song, "The Message"
Carrie Underwood: amazing climb to fame
How did she rise to the top? By winning American Idol in 2005. This can be somewhat surprising since most Idol winners, don't end up having a lasting career. Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood are of the few who do. Other past winning contestants such as Ruban, and runner up Clay Aiken haven't been heard about in years.
Carrie Underwood was automatically a favorite on the show and was safe every single week.
After her win, she released her debut album titled Some Hearts which held 3 hit singles including an all-time favorite "Before He Cheats".
In 2007 she released her second album, Carnival Ride, and then again in 2009 released her third album Play On.
Throughout these records she has had popular hit singles such as "His Last Name", a song about going to the bar and drinking a little too much and accidentally getting married, "Undo It", a song about a breakup and wanting to undo everything that ever happened, a very empowering song for women who have been treated badly in a relationship, and "Cowboy Casanova", warning girls to stay away from those guys you just can't resist. A pattern of man-bashing tunes, that become extremely popular due to the fact that broken hearts are not uncommon.
But she doesn't just sing about bad guys and breakups. She has heartfelt songs such as "Jesus Take the Wheel" which tells the story of a single mom who almost gets into a fatal car accident and finds herself praying to Jesus to help her get to where she needs to be.
Carrie has won many awards including Grammies, American Country Music awards and she is even in the Guiness World Book of Records for having the most number one songs on the Billboard Hot Country songs between 1991 and 2012 (she has 11 and is tied with Reba McEntire).
It is clear to see that Carrie Underwoods career has taken off full steam ahead, and it doesn't look like it's slowing down anytime soon. She just released her newest single from her upcoming album Blown Away. The song is titled "Good Girl" and once again, is a song about staying away from the wrong man. Some do not like how her vocal style has gone from country to more so country/pop, but take a listen for yourself.

coachella
The Coachella Valley music and Arts Festival commonly known as Coachella, Coachellafest or Coachella Festival is a multi-day annual music and arts festival, organized by Goldenvoic and held at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California, in the Inland Empire's Coachella Valley.
The event features many genres of music including rock, indie, Hip Hop and electronic music as well as large sculptural art. The event has several stages/tents set-up throughout the grounds, each playing live music continuously.
The main stages are: Coachella Stage, Outdoor Theatre, Gobi Tent, Mojave Tent, and the Sahara Tent
The History:
On the evening of November 5, 1993 the rock band Pearl Jam performed before almost 25,000 fans who stood and sat through the night on the lawns of Indio's historic and previously rock-festival free Empire Polo Club. Although band managment had chosen this untested and under-developed site as part of a boycott of Ticketmaster and the Southern California auditoriums it controlled, the event established the new venue's suitability for large-scale rock events.
Six years later, on October 9 and 10, 1999 the first actual Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival was held. Due to Woodstock 99's fires and riots, Coachella promoters were not allowed to offer on site camping, a ban that continued until the 2002 festival.
In 2002, the event once again returned to the two-day format, and saw a reunited Siouxsie and the Banshees, as well as headlining acts Björk and Oasis. The strong supporting acts helped prove to the community of Indio, California that the event was capable of bringing in money and ending without conflict.
The headlining act in 2011 was Kanye West and included performances by Mumford & Sons, a reunited Big Audio Dynamite, Arcade Fire, Kings of Leon and the Black Keys among the 190 acts. Just after the 2011 line up was released and tickets became available, the three-day tickets sold out in six days
On May 31, 2011, Goldenvoice announced that the festival will be held over two weekends starting in 2012
Coachella 2012 ticket went on sale at on Jan 13th at 10am and were sold out by 1pm PST. This is by far the festival's fastest sell out to date

The Indie scene.
what does indie actually mean ??
In music, independent music, often shortened to indie music or "indie" is a term used to describe independence from major commercial record labels or their subsidiaries, and an autonomous, Do-It-Yourself approach to recording and publishing.
Independent labels have a long history of promoting developments in popular music, stretching back to the post-war period.
The National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS), are the famous organization behind the Grammy Awards, whichbegan in the 1950s as an organization of 25 independent record labels including Herald and Ember Records, and Atlantic Records.
Internet technology allows artists to introduce their music to a potentially enormous audience at low cost without necessarily affiliating with a major recording label. The design of digital music software encourages the discovery of new music. This, in turn, creates many opportunities for independent bands.
Royalties from digital services could prove to be an important source of income. If an artist has already paid to record, manufacture, and promote their album, there is little to no additional cost for independent artists to distribute their music online.

Paul Is Dead: Still More "Proof" from Magical Mystery Tour
The most common clue associated with this album is the walrus. conspiracy theorists for some reason contend that the walrus is a viking symbol of death and misfortune. It is unknown where or when this tidbit of information began being included in people's lists of clues that Paul is Dead. There is no evidence that any culture has used the walrus as a symbol for death. The walrus on the album is actually intended as a reference to The Walrus and The Carpenter by Lewis Carroll.
The stars spelling out the band name were also used as a clue. If the album cover was looked at in the mirror, and the right stars were connected, a phone number was said to appear. One single phone number was never agreed upon but calling said numbers would supposedly connect to a funeral parlor or a man claiming to be Billy Shears.
The album came with a 24 page booklet which has been as thoroughly scanned for clues of Paul's demise as the rest of the post-rumoured-death Beatles' albums. Included in the book is a picture of Paul behind a sign that says "I was," a picture of the Beatles surrounded by doctors, Paul Barefoot, and an image for Fool on the Hill where Paul appears to have been drawn with a crack in his head.
Most of the evidence used by people who want to prove that Paul is Dead involves Paul being different than the other Beatles. For example, his appearing barefoot and facing backwards. An example of this on Magical Mystery Tour would be the infamous black carnation. While the other Beatles wear red ones in the photo, Paul's is black.
Even though Paul is most likely alive, these kinds of clues do point to his death in a way. It was his ego that drove him and John apart. He always had to be differnet and appear as the "main Beatle." Instead of working together, Paul and John began a sort of song writing arms race, destroying their friendship as well as their amazing creative potential as a team. This is arguably the main blow that killed the Beatles. Paul did die, but so did Ringo, George, and John.

Paul Is Dead: More "Proof" From Sgt. Pepper
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band is the eighth album by The Beatles. It is often said to be one of the greatest albums of all time. The album defines psychedelic rock and is well known for its iconic cover. With its surrealism and experimental feel, it is a go-to for fans searching for hidden meanings in their quest to prove that Paul is Dead.
The cover of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band is a funeral. That is one thing casual fans and conspiracy theorists who think Paul died can agree on. The Beatles are shown surrounded by other famous people, the dead among them allegedly staring directly at Paul. There is a hand over Paul's head which subscribers to the Paul is Dead theory say resembles a holy man blessing a dead body. Paul is the only Beatle facing completely forward and some contend that he looks as though he is being propped up by the others because he is actually lifeless.
On the inside cover, Paul is in the fetal position. Theorists say that this is how the dead are buried in India. Also cited as a clue is the O.P.D patch Paul has. Those unfamiliar with Canadian law enforcement claim it stands for "Officially Pronounced Dead" and is used to somehow declare someone dead in England. While most clues may seem improbable, this one is plainly false as the patch is indisputably an "Ontario Provincial Police" patch. It was given to Paul after the Beatles' 1966 concert in Toronto.
On the back cover, Paul is facing backwards. How this proves he is dead is never really discussed by anyone but it is often cited as a clue nonetheless. The Ribbons on the three "living" Beatles are on the left sides, which is military funeral dress code in England.
Some versions of the album have the lyrics printed on the back. On some of these, George's finger is pointing to the lyric "Wednesday morning at five o'clock as the day begins." This is apparently the time that Paul was in his fatal accident.
The titular song on Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band introduces the concept of the album. The Beatles are no more and the album is being recorded by a new group, lead by a man named Billy Shears (the songs that "Billy" sings are voiced by Ringo Starr). Theorists claim that Billy Shears is the name of the winner of a Beatles look-alike contest and is the man who may have replaced Paul. In the song he sings, A Little Help From My Friends, there is a line that goes “What would do if I sang out of tune? Would you stand up and walk out on me?” This is said to refer to the fact that the "new Paul" can't quite sing the same as the real one.
On British pressings of the record, the album ends with a 15-kilohertz high-frequency tone which Lennon has said it "especially intended to annoy your dog." It is followed by what seems to be gibberish. A consensus on what is said has never been reached (although Paul has said that it says "'It really couldn't be any other," theorists don't believe him because he is not the real Paul to them). Despite the uncertainty, this too is often cited as a clue of Paul's death, even though nobody knows what it is they are citing. This seems to occur rather frequently for such a persistent urban legend.
Paul Is Dead: The "Proof" in Abbey Road
In the late-sixties, an urban legend surfaced seemingly out of nowhere claiming that Paul McCartney of The Beatles had died in 1966 and had since then been replaced by an actor. The rumour, helped along by some American college students pubishing articles about it, said that clues that Paul had died could be found in the lyrics and artwork of Beatles albums. Looking for these clues soon became a worldwide phenomenon.
The rumour gained popularity around when the album Abbey Road was released and it was to this album that many people first turned to for the alleged clues that had been left for fans. The album cover is interpreted by beleivers of the legend to be a funeral procession for Paul. John is dressed in white, like a priest or other religious figure. Ringo is supposed to be dressed as an undertaker. Paul is dressed shabbily and bare foot, representing a corpse. Lastly, George is dressed in old jeans and is seen by fans as a gravedigger.
The Fact that Paul is holding his cigarette in his right hand when he is supposed to be left handed is taken as yet another sign by fans that he has been replaced.
On the back of the Album, some rather far fetched clues can be found. The dots in front of the "Beatles" sign can be connected into a 3. Fans took this as meaning there were only 3 remaining Beatles. The woman in blue's arm is also supposed to be Paul's profile.
The songs themselves on Abbey Road are often cited as proof of Paul's demise. "Come Together" in particular is magnet for analyzations. The song is said to be about a funeral, with people coming together over a grave. Some of the lyrics even tie the song directly to Paul. "He wears no shoe shine," for example, is about corpse-Paul on the cover's lack of shoes. "Toe Jam Football" is a reference to Paul's sport of choice, Rugby. He got “monkey finger,” meaning the person John is singing about is skinny and bony like a skeleton. The "one and one and one is three" line is supposedly another reference to how only 3 Beatles remain.
The last 3 songs on the album are “Golden slumbers,” (an eternal sleep) “Carry That Weight,” (a heavy coffin) and “The End.”
While some or all of this "proof" may seem a little bit improbable as anything but coincidence, many fans truly beleived and still do believe that Paul is dead and went on to find more clues in albums like Sgt. Peppers, Magical Mystery Tour, The White Album, and Let It Be.

soundtracks to tv shows
Somehow, these shows either find artists and bands that have under 1,000 views on myspace or youtube, haven't released an album, or are so non mainstream that its shocking. It is so cool when you've heard more of a "local" band played on one of these highly watched shows. I would love to have a job like that. I spent countless hours, eyes glued, to my computer searching for new music. Whether it be on AP, Alternative Press, or cruising through iTunes.
This is a fantastic site whether you are a fan of One Tree Hill or not. It gives you all the artists, songs, and episodes that they use. Onetreehillmusic
You are able to find a whole whack of new music.
Great new song from the band called "Ambassadors". This song was just released a week ago, and was featured on that weeks episode. Give it a listen!
Ambassadors - Litost
I am just so curious if the music department of these shows just sits on the computer all day looking up potential songs to be featured in future episodes. And what sort of process do they go through. Is it more about the tempo of the song? Or perhaps its more about the underlying lyrics?
Do these people create play lists like many of us do?
According to our mood, or what may be happening in our lives that day. I know for myself I have a play list for most emotions and aspects of my life.
I think its pretty cool!
