My Evolution of Music

Besides the music I heard in daily life, the first genre of music I listened to was classical music.  I was introduced to this kind of music from my ballet classes.  I enjoyed how each notes flowed to the next.  When listening to classical music such as Beethoven's compositions it is hard to image what kind of skill he must have had to make such beautiful music.

As my understanding of music and the different types of genres progressed, I slowly began to enjoy more types of music.  I ventured into folk and 90's music - mostly whatever it was my father listened to because I was still too young to find my own music.  I find most folk music to be a contemporary take on some aspects of classical music.  The music still flows wonderfully from one note to the next but it incorporates a spoken story and does not leave as much to the imagination as classical music does.

Pop music was a very dominant genre while I was growing up in the 90's.  Most of the music was upbeat, catchy and the lyrics of the songs resonated with youth growing up at that time.  Artists under this genre included Britney Spears, N'Sync, Backstreet Boys and Destiny's Child.

In the early 2000's I further expanded my musical tastes and began listening to country music.  Most country music is a lot more twangy and upbeat than folk music but I have always been drawn to the beautiful, sad, entertaining or even funny stories that country music songs tell.

Finally, I began to discover alternative music like Snow Patrol, Florence and the Machine, Bon Iver, and the Band of Horses.  Alternative music can really encompass many different sounds and styles of music. Mostly it is slower but sometimes it has a quicker tempo.  Although many of the lyrics are not as imaginative or in depth as country music lyrics, there are still so many different songs that tell amazing stories.
