Smash is a new TV series that is classified as a musical drama. It is created by Theresa Rebeck and produced by Steven Spielberg who is connected with a great number of amazing movies and television shows. The show Smash follows a group of people trying to create a musical based on the life of Marilyn Monroe. The music in Smash is a a mixture of covered music and original songs written for the Marilyn Monroe musical. The original songs are written by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman (Hairspray, Catch Me If You Can). They are Tony and Grammy award winners who are also executive producers of the the show. The original music is a broadway style genre but the other music covers a range of genres like Adele and actual Marilyn Monroe songs.
The star of Smash is singer/actress Katharine McPhee who was "discovered" in the fifth season of American Idol in 2006. She was originally one of the forerunners to play Marilyn Monroe in the musical on the TV show but another actress (Megan Hilty) landed the lead. In the show McPhee is more talented but Hilty's experience wins out. There are moments when it looks like McPhee's character will be chosen in the end but only time will tell!
This is a video of Katharine McPhee singing a cover of Shake It Out by Florence and the Machine. There is unfortunately no live video footage with the song but it best showcases McPhee's outstanding talent as a singer.
